OEM Grand Rounds: Musculoskeletal Pain From an Occupational & Environmental Medicine Perspective 

Lecture Overview:

Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are a leading cause of global burden of disease and in big part this can be workplace related. At the same time, MSK pain has become a leading cause of global burden of disability in the world. Dr. Irakli Soulakvelidze's presentation will mostly address mechanisms, prevention and management of chronic MSK pain from the perspective of occupational medicine. He will also address current research on preventing the transition from acute to chronic pain and disability.

BIO

Dr. Irakli Soulakvelidze is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Washington and a Pain Physician at VA Puget Sound in Seattle. He completed his medical education and residency at Tbilisi State Medical Institute in Georgia, followed by a PhD at Moscow Nikolay Pirogov, 2nd Medical Institute. He further advanced his clinical expertise through research fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco, and McMaster University in Canada.

Dr. Soulakvelidze completed an Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Washington and a Pain Medicine Fellowship at Virginia Mason Medical Center. His work now focuses on musculoskeletal pain and chronic pain management, with particular emphases on spinal and neuropathic pain and complex regional pain syndrome. Dr. Soulakvelidze has introduced a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program to the treatment of chronic pain patients at the UW Pain Clinic. As a practitioner, educator, and researcher, Dr. Soulakvelidze is dedicated to improving patient outcomes and advancing the field of pain medicine.
