Instructor Highlight: Stephanie Carter

Stephanie’s dedication to health and safety education is rooted in her passion for sharing knowledge and learning from her students. With a PhD in Industrial Hygiene and over a decade of experience in  safety and exposure control, Stephanie is a valuable asset to our team. Her work in assessing and controlling workplace hazards continues to make a lasting impact in industries ranging from construction to food processing. We are thrilled to highlight her commitment to fostering safer, healthier work environments.

Inspiration to Teach Health and Safety

When asked what inspires her to teach health and safety, Stephanie replied:

 I’m deeply grateful for the instructors who generously shared their expertise, helping to grow my knowledge and elevate the profession. Teaching now allows me to pay that forward, and it’s incredibly rewarding. Plus, it's a lot of fun—I continue to learn just as much from my students as I did from my mentors!

Professional Journey

Stephanie is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and has an MSPH (University of Alabama @ Birmingham and PhD. (University of Washington) in Industrial hygiene. Stephanie have been actively engaged in understanding exposure during welding and related activities and controlling the exposures through ventilation and substitution. She has presented at professional conferences and symposia with particular emphasis on the industrial hygiene assessment of large-scale maintenance and construction projects, welding health and safety, silica, and ventilation of confined spaces. She has provided consulting services investigating respiratory irritants or allergen exposures in aluminum smelters, the pharmaceutical industry, food processing, and in the fish processing industry. 

Academic and Current Role

Stephanie is currently an Industrial hygienist with iWorkWise in Seattle, WA as well as an Instructor with the University of Washington Occupational Safety and Health Continuing Education Programs (UW OSHCE).

This course focuses on describing noise hazards in the workplace, students will describe sound properties and their relationship to noise-induced hearing loss, hearing protection usage, and using a sound level meter.
