Inspiration to Teach Health and Safety

Troy is inspired to teach health & safety for the following reasons:

"I teach health and safety because I really enjoy the students. I enjoy the interaction with my students and work to make the training not only informational but also fun."

Professional Journey

Troy was working as a Chief Technologist in a medical laboratory in Lubbock Texas when he was
recruited by OSHA to become an industrial hygienist. He says he had no idea what an industrial
hygienist was and “Now I am one”. After four years as an OSHA industrial hygienist in West Texas he had the opportunity to transfer to the Portland, OR office, a move which he never regretted. He spent two+ years with the Portland OSHA office before accepting a position as a Safety Engineer with a local shipyard. While working for the shipyard Troy trained to become an NFPA Certified Marine Chemist. He worked as a Marine Chemist for 30+ years at shipyards in San Diego, Los Angeles/Long Beach, Portland and Singapore. He was recruited by the OSHA Training Institute in Chicago to teach the Maritime/Shipyard course for OSHA CSHOs and the US Coastguard which he taught for about 15 years in shipyards and ports in Seattle, Long Beach/Los Angeles, San Diego, St. Louis, New Orleans, Tampa, FL, Mobile, Alabama, and Newport News, Virginia. Troy developed and taught the first 40 hour HAZWOPER course to receive EPA accreditation in the Pacific Northwest, and he was one of the original instructors for the Pacific Northwest OSHA Education Center starting in 1995.

Academic and Current Role

Troy now teaches a variety of industrial hygiene, safety, and maritime courses. He also works as a health and safety consultant and trainer in a variety of industries. When he is not teaching, he enjoys the family beach house christened as “Longway from Lubbock” and his family, grandson, and grandniece. He enjoys kayaking, sailing, and outdoor activities with family and friends, and annual Hawaii trips with his wife Debra.
