Bruce Millies

Inspiration to Teach Health and Safety

In his words, Bruce is inspired to teach health and safety for the following reason:

 

“For me, the best part of teaching is seeing students learn and understand safety and
health principles and technical content that they can use to make their workplaces
safer.”

Professional Journey

Bruce Millies came to occupational safety and health by way of his prior experience as a
lawyer working in environmental law and workers’ rights. He has a JD degree in law and an MS degree in Industrial Hygiene and Safety. He has been a certified industrial hygienist since 1990. Bruce taught industrial hygiene and safety at the University of Washington and at Empire State College, a branch of the State University of New York. He worked for fifteen years as an industrial hygienist and worker training specialist for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Bruce was a visiting professor at the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico, and he has taught numerous industrial hygiene and safety short courses in several Latin
American countries. Between and during his formal education, Bruce worked as a printer, bookstore clerk, carpenter, taxi driver, and electrician’s assistant.

 

Academic and Current Role

Bruce is currently an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington. He has been an instructor in the UW Occupational Safety and Health Continuing Education Program since 2005. Bruce’s areas of expertise include worker training, hazard recognition and control, air monitoring, respiratory protection, electrical safety, hazardous materials, and emergency response.
