Course Description
Radiation safety continues to be a significant occupational and public health concern in the Pacific Northwest. In many workplaces, environmental health and safety practitioners are responsible for some aspects of radiation safety and controls for protecting workers. Practitioners are often asked to cover fundamental technical questions about radiation to more complex issues, such as those ranging from Fukushima, nuclear threats and the human health risks of cell phone towers and power lines.
This 2-day course is designed to give participants the opportunity to review the principles of radiation protection (ionizing and non-ionizing), regulations and recordkeeping requirements, and discuss the science of health risk and recommended safety practices for emerging sources of radiation. Industry case studies and an interactive instrumentation lab will reinforce principles of radiation safety and give participants an opportunity to learn more about best practices for monitoring and to interact with other professionals who have successfully implemented controls in their workplaces.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Review health hazards of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, including new information and research
- Describe regulations and recordkeeping requirements for a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and/or an Environmental Health and Safety Manager
- Describe concept of radiation protection principles, including how to interpret measurements and evaluate risk
- Discuss science of health risk and recommended safety practices for new and emerging sources of radiation
