INSTRUCTOR HIGHLIGHT

Anthony Barnard

Mr. Barnard began his HSE career in 1987 in the Army as an industrial hygiene and safety technician. After completing his service, he worked as an HSE consultant in Colorado, Hawaii, and Alaska. In 2002, Mr. Barnard arrived in Anchorage. He worked at a consulting company at Nortech Environmental, a contracting company with ASRC, and then BP for ten years. Mr. Barnard has been an active HSE professional, serving as the President of the Midnight Sun AIHA for several years and presenting on various IH and safety topics at the monthly ASSP meetings, Safety Summits, Governor H&S Conferences, and other organizations. Currently, he has his own IH consulting company in Anchorage.

"My inspiration and purpose are to gain a higher focus on industrial hygiene in Alaska. Every year in the US, about 5,000 people die from safety related injuries/incidents. However, more than 50,000 people die from occupational illnesses. Yet, the illnesses don't get the same recognition. My aim is to mitigate some of the IH exposures here in Alaska and reduce our workers' risks from occupational illnesses."
