Class description

Foundations of Green Chemistry and Toxicology for Chemical Stewardship

Dates: October 6 – November 21, 2025 | Credit: 2.6 CEUs | Cost: $975

This course introduces the core principles of green chemistry and toxicology as they relate to responsible chemical management. Participants will explore how these scientific foundations can be used to strengthen chemical stewardship practices and support the development of safer, more sustainable products and processes.

Dates: October 6 – November 21, 2025 (7 weeks)

• Explore the principles of green chemistry and the importance of its role in our society.

• Describe the different goals of alternatives assessment versus risk assessment and life-cycle assessment/ life-cycle thinking and potential limitations of implementing sustainability strategies.

• Define the minimum set of toxicological health and environmental health endpoints identified by the OECD to assess whether a chemical is a safer alternative.

• Discuss how chemical hazard assessment informs risk management, policy decisions, and can help drive green chemistry and product stewardship

• Recognize and use tools for identifying toxicological risks related to physicochemical properties of chemicals and that allow switching to greener and safer alternatives through informed solvent selection, use of renewable feedstocks and molecular design of chemicals.
