Assessment Tools for Safer Chemical Decisions for Sustainable Chemistry

Participants will learn to apply tools and methodologies used in comparative chemical assessments, including hazard evaluation and performance. Through practical exercises, they will explore how to make informed, science-based decisions that minimize risks to human health and the environment.

• Describe available alternatives assessment frameworks, methodologies and tools.
• Design an alternatives assessment approach to avoid regrettable substitution.
• Differentiate between high value third-party chemical evaluation tools and certifications, their advantages and disadvantages, and use by different players in the supply chain.
• Evaluate a variety of free-to-use and subscription-based chemical hazard assessment tools available for use by different players in a product’s supply chain.
• Identify overlap of alternatives assessment with other sustainability metrics and approaches (e.g. life-cycling thinking, carbon reductions).
• List case studies to highlight challenges regarding scoping, identification of alternatives, decision rules, and risk for regrettable substitution.
