January 9-10, 2025 (Thursday 11am - Friday 12:30pm)

Semiahmoo Resort, Blaine, WA

The Annual Cascadia conference on Environmental Occupational and Population health brings together researchers to build community and address critical issues that impact population health in our region.

This intimate conference provides faculty, staff, and students a forum to share new ideas and current or evolving research through plenary sessions, short (20-minute) podium presentations, ignite presentation (5 min) and posters, small group discussions, and socializing. This meeting is a great opportunity for cross border conversations and collaborations.

This year’s conference will feature three thematic areas. However, we welcome abstracts on any topics broadly related to environmental, occupational, and population health.

  • Impacts of a changing climate on worker health
  • Impacts of a changing climate on vulnerable populations
  • Climate impacts of infectious disease

Talk title:
Sweat Equity: An ecology of everyday life on a warming planet

Bio:
Vivek Shandas is a Professor of Geography and Director of the Sustaining Urban Places Research Lab at Portland State University. His teaching, research, and consulting activities address socially just solutions to environmental health challenges through examining the intersection of exposure to climate-induced events (e.g., wildfire smoke, extreme heat, pluvial flooding, etc.), community science, and landscape ecology. He has published over 100 scientific journal articles, five books, and his work has been highlighted by The New York Times, Scientific American, Guardian, National Geographic, and dozens of other national and international media outlets. In 2023, he was appointed by the US Secretary of Agriculture to serve on the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council and has also served as a co-author on the National Climate Assessment, and publications from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. He also serves as the founder and current advisor to CAPA Strategies, a climate adaptation consulting firm.
