Meet Tasha McMaster
Tasha coordinates conferences that bring together safety professionals, employers, workers, and industry leaders to learn, share ideas, and strengthen workplace safety across Washington State.

"Bringing Workplace Safety and Health Learning to Life"
Tasha McMaster serves as the Conference Manager for the Governor’s Industrial Safety & Health Conference, a role she describes as the perfect fit for this stage of her professional career.
Tasha works on behalf of a nonprofit board in partnership with the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries and the University of Washington Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS).
She enjoys the variety, challenges, and opportunities each day brings, and her leadership helps create meaningful connections that support safer and healthier workplaces.

Heat’s impact on Washington’s outdoor workers
Xinyuan Hao, 2026 DEOHS Outstanding Master’s Student, examined how temperature patterns related to 17 years of heat-related illness claims for her thesis.
She found that heat-related illness increased approximately five-fold when the daily maximum temperature was over 90° F compared to cooler days. She showed that factors beyond the daily high temperature are important in predicting heat-related illness.

Creating healthy environments, healthier communities and safer workplaces
The U.W. Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences faculty-led research investigates emerging environmental health issues such as air pollution and dementia and how pesticides impact human health. This research aims to improve access to clean air, clean water, safe food and safe workplaces—the building blocks of healthy communities.

Supervisory Safety & Health Duties
July 7 - 10, 2026 | 9:00 am - 3:00 pm PT | Virtual Instructor Led
This course covers general safety and health requirements from the standpoint of supervising, training, administering, and organizing safety and health programs. It includes regulatory requirements and specific applications for written program requirements, documentation, discipline, hazard evaluation, and compliance.

OSHA #2255 Principles of Ergonomics
June 20 - 22, 2026 | 8:30 am - 3:30 pm PT | Virtual Instructor Led
This course covers the use of ergonomic principles to recognize, evaluate, and control workplace conditions that cause or contribute to musculoskeletal and nerve disorders. Course topics include work physiology, anthropometry, musculoskeletal disorders, use of video display terminals, and risk factors such as vibration, temperature, material handling, repetition, and lifting and patient transfers in health care.

OSHA #5410 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Maritime Industry
July 13 - 17, 2026 | 8:00 am - 4:00 pm PT | Virtual Instructor Led
This course covers OSHA policies, procedures, and standards for the maritime industry. Using the OSHA Maritime Standards as a guide, special emphasis is placed on those areas in the maritime industry which are most hazardous. Look to cover OSHA Maritime Standards, identify hazards in the maritime industry and determine appropriate controls and abatement, locate OSHA Maritime Standards, and policies and procedures.

OSHA #7200 Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control
July 23, 2026 | 8:00 am - 4:00 pm PT| Virtual Instructor Led
This course covers the development and implementation of Exposure Control Plans (ECP). Course topics include understanding the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, determining potential exposure and control methods, developing an ECP, vaccinations, exposure incidents, training, and record keeping.

OSHA #2045 Machinery and Machine Guarding Standards
August 3 - 6, 2026 | Seattle
8:00 am to 4:00 pm | Monday–Wednesday
8:00 am to 2:00 pm | Thursday
This course covers the various types of common machinery, machine safe guards, and related OSHA regulations and procedures. Including hazards associated with various types of machinery and the determination of proper machine safe guards. Course topics include machinery processes, mechanical motions, points of operation, control of hazardous energy sources (lockout/tagout), and guarding of portable powered tools.

OSHA #2264 Permit-Required Confined Space Entry
August 3 - 5, 2026 | 8:30 am to 4:30 pm | Portland OR
This course covers the safety and health hazards associated with permit-required confined space entry. Course topics include recognition of confined space hazards, identification of permit and non-permit required confined spaces, use of instrumentation to evaluate atmospheric hazards, ventilation techniques, development and implementation of a confined space program, proper signage, and training requirements.
